Imperial Fists Painting Yellow - An Experiment and an Evolution

We all know how tough it is to paint yellow, so I set out to yet again smash the preconceived notions of the painting world (an in-joke there not just plain arrogance haha) and find an easy and successful way of painting Imperial Fists. They all said (they being Ben) you couldn't dry-brush marines but I showed them! So here goes...

First of I start by basecoating them white in order to bring out the yellow more. Then I dry-brush Averland Sunset.

Thousand Sons Sorcerers Step-By-Step

Again, it's been ages since I posted anything but to kick it back into gear I thought I would do a quick step-by-step just to show how I paint my Thousand Sons. It's a pretty simple and quick process that ends in a decently good table top quality level model.

Here they are constructed first - a few more scrolls and scripture parchments will be added later. I have used a mix of Chaos Terminators and Grey Knight bits (thanks to Sam for providing the halberds, tabards and arms). The heads are a mix of loyalist power armour heads and chaos sorcerer helmets (these needed to be trimmed in order to fit into the aperture).

The Custodians: Creating Background for a Space Marine Chapter I

Back in the day, when Leman Russ was an Imperial Guard general and when marines came with beaks, I created my own chapter of Space Marines. They weren't much more than a colour scheme (blue and yellow) and a name - The Custodians - which sounded cool because it seemed like they were in charge of guarding something - I never really thought what.
Well, that army played a few games before sitting in a box for twenty or so years, and then getting taken out to sell on ebay about 3 years ago.

The coming of Hive Fleet Blattodea

As Ollanius Persson takes a moment to admire his surroundings, he sits down on the soft field and takes a deep breathe. It’s been a good season for him and his crew. A combination of ample rainfall with just the right level of humidity resulted in an above average yield for his crops. He takes a drink of water, and relishes in its sweetness. “You’re one lucky bastard,” he said softly to himself. Life has been good ever since Oll settled down in one of the recent planetary systems to be discovered and assimilated into the ever expanding Imperium of Man. As a primary agricultural world, Joro Secondus quickly became a valuable resource given the nutrient rich landscape, accommodating climate, abundance supply in precious minerals and a biosphere that resembled ancient Terra.

The coming of Hive Fleet Blattodea

Hey SnS folks... as I prepare to muster up my Tyranids swarm, I thought it would be cool to come up with a bit of background fluff for them.  I wanted it to be a small encounter, made up of a small reconnaissance brood of Genestealers from Hive Fleet Blattodea.  For those who do not know, blattodea is an order of insects, more commonly known as cockroaches. Stay tuned.......

Heldrake WIP

First off, this was a very good kit to put together: only two sprues and for the most part the sections had wide surface areas to bond to each other. The only bit that was kind of awkward was the middle wing vane as the ball joint joining it to the main body was slightly too small and therefore the glue wouldn't always take and support the weight. Other than that though it required very little assembly for what appears to be a very complex model.

Anyway, this is just a WIP at the moment and more completed photos will go up as it progresses...

Ultramarines 2nd Company Command Squad

Ancient Atavian, Company Champion Ethrion, Veteran Tibero, Veteran Tiriax, Apothecary Vandius

Tibero, Tiriax and Ethrion equipped with the latest Mk.VIII 'Errant' armour variant with modified Mk. IV 'Maximus' helms. Tiriax however prefers the increased protection that the older but more heavily armoured 'Corvus' pattern leg provides.

Ultramarine armour

Quite self explanatory: tanks. Added white strips to them all to make them a little more interesting than just plan blue.

The white on the razorbacks and the vindicators still need cleaning up as they are just rough washed at the moment.

New Ultramarine scheme

Restarted painting my Ultramarines, decided to get them ALL painted which is admittedly a huge task!

The blue is a little darker than previously so they have a bit more of a grim dark feel about them, but the style is still the same cell shaded effect.

First on the block are my fast attack units: all my assault marines, bike squadrons and storm talon. Here's a taster...

Pink and Blue Horrors WIP

Not quite finished yet obviously, still have to base them, paint the gold on a few of the blue guys and do the odd feathers.

These cheeky chaps will be part of the secondary detachment summoned by the Thousand Sons alongside a herald of Tzeentch and perhaps a swarm of screamers too.

Not going to have daemons as a primary detachment as, well let's be honest, my Thousand Sons have to be the ones in control of the warp not the other way around!

Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Zanbar

Things have been mightly quiet on the blog since February which I'll take responsibility for. A lot of my painting of late has been Bretonnians which obviously don't fit here on a 40k blog! However, I saw this Inquisitor model in my LGS and just had to get it and paint it.

I reckon with the upcoming release of Tau (and Eldar at some point in the near but still murky future) I would classify him as a member of the Ordo Xenos. Just need some Deathwatch marines to accompany him in a blacked out Stormraven and I'll be set.

Monday, February 4, 2013

Since the number of postings on SnS has been a bit on the low-end, decided to upload a recently completed Dark Angels Tactical Squad, straight from the DV boxed set.  The only conversion done to the unit is on the Veteran Sergeant's melee weapon.  Ethrion - your traitors will feel the full wrath of the Lion's sons tomorrow.

"Repent, for tomorrow you die."

Ethrion - please stick this with the rest of my DA page... cheers!

Erasmus: a Sabbat World Narrative Campaign

In the aftermath of the Imperial victory on Balhaut, fleeing Chaos Forces scattered, bring ruin and flames to the exposed planets of the Sabbat Worlds. Tanith burnt. Sapiencia, Verghast, Aexe Cardinal, and unhappy Cociaminus all suffered the blight of war.

And Erasmus III, : where Magister Erok brought his elite Blood Pact forces.

Pleas to the Imperial Warmaster, Macaroth, went unheeded. 'I was chasing the horizon,' he later said. While he chased glory, undefended planets continued to burn.

The people of Erasmus III were lucky. Thier pleas were heard. By a passing Black Templar's Battle Barge....who heard, and listened, and sent a force to liberate the planet.

Alex and I were playing a lot of games, so we thought it was a good idea to put these battles into a narrative framwork, so that our usual pick-up games became a loose campaign. Welcome to the Scourging of Erasmus Narrative Campaign!

Iron Warriors WIP

Yes, this is now my 5th chaos legion and yes these guys aren't quite finished yet (detailing still required) but this blog has been in suspended animation for too long so I figured I would try and revive it with my current project.

The idea is for my core of the army to be comprised of Iron Warriors as well as any and all chaotic looking units such as the starter set dreadnoughts, forge/maulerfiends and heldrakes. I've always felt that the design of these things doesn't really fit with any of the existing chaos armies I own but suit Iron Warriors perfectly.

With Iron Warriors as the core it can be augmented with Thousand Sons, World Eaters, Emperors Children or Night Lords for the elite special infantry.

Anyway more to follow and completion of these models to follow as well.
